Professional Artificial Turf Installation
Artificial grass only performs as long as the ground under it stays put — and in Northern Virginia, that is the hard part. Most installers roll turf straight onto dirt, so the surface heaves, dishes, and holds water the first time our clay soil swells. Tuck GC installs turf the way we build patios: as a Class A Contractor, we excavate to a compacted, free-draining base, then lay the turf on top. That is what lets a Fairfax or Arlington dog run survive years of freeze-thaw without going lumpy.
We got into turf at our own house. After finishing a new patio, we watched the dogs track mud across the stone every time it rained, and realized a hardscape isn't finished without a clean surface for the yard to drain to. We built a turf buffer zone off the patio, the mud problem disappeared, and we have installed that same system for homeowners across Fairfax, Arlington, Springfield, and Burke since.
🐾 The Mud-Free Dog Run
Fairfax clay holds water; a natural lawn turns to mud.
We build pet runs on a free-draining backing so storm water passes straight through instead of pooling on the surface. The dogs can go out minutes after the rain stops and come back with dry paws — no mud, no dug-up holes.
🏛️ Integrated Into the Hardscape
Turf works best as part of the patio, not an afterthought in the corner.
We set artificial grass directly into the hardscape design — turf ribbons between large-format pavers, or a clean transition from a stone seating wall to the lawn. Because we build the paver base and the turf base to the same grade, the two surfaces sit flush and drain together.
The Installation Standard
A turf lawn is only as good as the base beneath it. We apply the same masonry-grade base prep we use under patios, so the surface stays level and drains instead of sinking or holding water.
1. Flexible PVC Bender-Board Edge
We frame the perimeter with flexible PVC bender board anchored by galvanized staples. It contours to curved beds, locks the turf edge down so it can't peel or lift, and won't rot or splinter the way pressure-treated wood does after a few wet NoVA winters.
2. Deep Excavation & RC6 Base
We excavate 5–6 inches and build a 4-inch base of RC6 recycled concrete, compacted in lifts. RC6's angular fines lock together for a rigid, permeable platform — it carries foot traffic without rutting and lets water pass through instead of trapping it against the clay below.
3. 2.7oz Woven Barrier
We sandwich a commercial-grade 2.7oz woven polypropylene barrier below and above the stone. The lower layer separates the base from the clay so fines can't pump up and create soft spots; the upper layer blocks weeds from rooting through the turf while still letting water drain.
4. HeroFill® Antimicrobial Infill
We brush in HeroFill, a green-colored sand infill treated with Zinc Omadine™. It weights the blades so they stand upright, and its antimicrobial action inhibits the mold and ammonia-producing bacteria that make pet turf smell — the part standard silica infill skips.
Why Artificial Grass Makes Sense for Northern Virginia
A natural lawn fights the local conditions every season. The heavy clay soil under most Fairfax County yards holds water instead of draining it, so low spots turn to moss and mud after every storm. The mature tree canopy across Burke and Annandale shades the ground below the four to six hours of direct sun that warm-season grasses like Zoysia or Bermuda need to fill in, leaving thin, patchy turf no matter how much you reseed.
Artificial grass sidesteps both problems. It doesn't depend on sunlight, its permeable backing moves water faster than compacted clay, and it holds the same green through humid August dry spells and January frosts — no irrigation, mowing, or seasonal reseeding.
The "Buffer Zone" Strategy
You don't have to turf the whole lot. Many of our Fairfax and Arlington clients put in an Artificial Grass Buffer Zone directly off the rear patio — a clean, usable area of roughly 500–1,000 square feet for the dogs and the kids — and leave the rest of the yard in natural mulch or woods. It concentrates the investment on the part of the yard you actually walk on and keeps the project to a sensible footprint.

Weather-Proof & Traffic Ready
The turf is rated for heavy traffic, so you can shovel snow straight off it without tearing the fibers. Because the base drains as fast as the snow melts, the surface clears on its own and the dogs keep a dry, usable spot through the deepest part of winter.
Sanitation & Easy Cleanup
Solid waste sits on top of the blades for a quick scoop, and liquids drain through the perforated backing instead of soaking into the ground. The antimicrobial infill keeps odor-causing bacteria in check, so the area stays a clean, low-maintenance surface for kids and pets.
Visit Our Local Showroom
Springfield, VA
We are an Authorized Installation Partner for Purchase Green, the artificial grass supplier with a showroom and warehouse here in Springfield. Marty, the owner, consults directly on our technical specs, and together we match the turf product to your yard's drainage and traffic — a pet-rated blade for a dog run reads very differently from a fine putting-green surface.
Ask to see the Luxury Spring or PG Pet Pro lines. Both are made in the USA and use Cool Yarn Technology, a heat-reflective yarn that runs noticeably cooler underfoot than standard synthetic blades in full sun.
Beyond the showroom, they keep a fully stocked warehouse in Northern Virginia. We can often pick up turf and infill same-day, which keeps the install on schedule instead of waiting on a freight order.
Premium turf only pays off over a base that drains. We set the grading and runoff plan first, so water sheds away from the house and never pools under the turf after it's laid.
What Drives the Cost of Artificial Grass in Fairfax & Arlington
Artificial grass pricing tracks the engineering under the turf, not just the square footage of green. The biggest cost drivers are the size of the area (a 500–1,000 sq ft buffer zone versus a full lawn), the turf product you choose (a standard lawn blade versus a premium Cool Yarn pet line), and the amount of demolition and excavation needed to remove old sod and dig down to a proper RC6 base. From there, the drainage work in heavy Fairfax clay, the bender-board edging and woven barriers, the antimicrobial infill, and site access for a fenced backyard all move the number. We design each yard to its own drainage needs rather than quote a flat per-foot rate.
Because every yard is scoped to your property, we price each one individually rather than by a flat rate. You'll find our project minimum and a full breakdown of what different budgets cover on our contact page.

Does artificial grass smell with dogs?
Not with our system. We excavate to a rapid-drainage RC6 base so urine flushes straight through, and we top the turf with HeroFill antimicrobial infill — a green-colored sand infused with Zinc Omadine that inhibits mold and neutralizes ammonia odors, keeping the yard smelling fresh.
How hot does artificial grass get in the summer?
We install Purchase Green turf with Cool Yarn technology. These engineered blades reflect UV rays so the surface runs significantly cooler than standard synthetic grass through Northern Virginia's humid August heat. A quick rinse on the hottest afternoons brings the temperature down further.
Do I have to turf my whole yard, or can I just do a section?
You do not have to turf your entire yard. Many of our Fairfax and Arlington clients install an Artificial Grass Buffer Zone of 500 to 1,000 square feet directly off the rear patio — a clean zone for the dogs and kids — while the rest of the yard stays natural mulch or woods. This strategic installation saves money while maximizing utility.
How do you keep the turf from sinking or getting lumpy over time?
We apply masonry-grade base prep. We excavate 5 to 6 inches and build a 4-inch base of RC6 recycled concrete compacted inch-by-inch, then layer a 2.7oz woven polypropylene barrier above and below it. This creates a rock-solid, permeable foundation that drains fast and will not settle or get lumpy under Northern Virginia's heavy clay and wet winters.
Can artificial grass handle snow and winter weather?
Yes. Our synthetic grass is rated for heavy loads, so you can shovel snow directly off the turf without damaging the fibers. Because the RC6 base drains so quickly, melting snow and ice run straight through and your dogs have a dry, accessible place to go 365 days a year.
Artificial grass is one part of a complete Patios & Hardscapes backyard plan. Many homeowners pair a turf buffer zone with paver patios for the entertaining area, and tie the whole yard together with a managed yard drainage system so water never pools against the turf or the house.
