Who builds flagstone patios in Alexandria, VA?

Tuck GC, Inc., a Class A (RBC #2705160024) design-build contractor, built this natural cleft Pennsylvania flagstone patio behind a townhouse in Alexandria, VA, inside an HOA wall that could not be removed, so every material went over the wall. The flagstone is mortared down on a concrete slab, with a terrace step-up, a seating wall, Chocolate Grey stone veneer over the brick walls and thermal flagstone caps.

About this project

Access made this job. The patio sits behind a townhouse in Alexandria, VA, inside an HOA wall that could not be removed, with no way to bring equipment around the house. So everything came in through the back: every material for the patio, the walls and the stairs went over the HOA wall and into the project.

How the patio is built

The patio is Pennsylvania flagstone, natural cleft in full range color, laid in pattern 2 and mortared down on a concrete slab, the same wet-set method we use for every flagstone patio. Bonding the stone to one slab keeps the pieces from shifting one by one with the soil; the slab reduces, but cannot eliminate, the effects of clay movement and frost heave (The Tuck Standard, Section 5F).

The terrace, the seating wall and the stone

The patio has a small terrace that steps up to a seating wall beside the big HOA wall. The existing brick walls are faced in Chocolate Grey wall stone veneer, and a thermal flagstone cap finishes the walls and the stairs.
