About this project
This McLean, VA homeowner first called us about a driveway project. It turned into a stone project at the front of the house: seating walls along the driveway, and this flagstone walkway with its planter walls. After that came a flagstone patio in the back and some fencing. One call became a rehab of the whole exterior, delivered through our general contracting services.
How the walkway is built
The walk is Pennsylvania flagstone, natural cleft in full range color, laid in pattern 2 and mortared down on a concrete slab, the same wet-set method we use for every stone walkway. The slab carries the walk as one piece, which reduces (though it cannot eliminate) the stone-by-stone heaving and settling a sand-set walk sees (The Tuck Standard, Section 5F). Mortar is rigid, so expect hairline joint cracks over time and periodic joint maintenance (Sections 8C and 8E).
The planter and seating walls
The planter and seating walls are block, faced with Chocolate Grey wall stone veneer in a mosaic pattern. The walls carry 1.5-inch thermal flagstone caps in full range color, and the seating wall got a thicker 2-inch premium thermal blue cap. We also built a river rock area.
