About this project

This McLean, VA homeowner first called us about a driveway apron. We built the apron to VDOT specifications under VDOT permit approval, then the concrete driveway, and the project kept growing: egress window build-outs, a walnut travertine patio, full PVC and Trex composite deck landings and stairs with low-voltage lighting on the decks and patio, and planter walls. A call about one thing became a whole-house exterior transformation, pulled together through our design-build general contracting.

How the travertine patio is built

The patio is walnut travertine mortared down on a concrete slab, the same wet-set method we use for every travertine patio. Bonding the stone to a slab keeps the pieces from moving one by one with the soil; the slab reduces, but cannot eliminate, the effects of clay movement (The Tuck Standard, Section 5F). The deck landings were built to Fairfax County's typical deck detail under a County permit.

The hard part: the egress wells

The hardest part of this job is not in the video. The existing egress window wells were built from wood timbers that were failing, so we rebuilt them in block.

The video above walks through the whole project. Two shorter videos from the same job focus on single parts: the travertine patio and deck landings, and the VDOT apron and concrete driveway.
