About this project
This Springfield, VA homeowner came to us through a referral from a next-door neighbor we had built a travertine patio and planter wall for. The project is a natural cleft, full range flagstone patio, a natural flagstone seating wall, a front walkway, and river rock around the whole project.
How the patio is built
The flagstone is mortared down on a concrete slab, the same wet-set method we use for every flagstone patio. Bonding the stone to one slab keeps the pieces from shifting one by one with the soil; the slab reduces, but cannot eliminate, the effects of clay movement and frost heave (The Tuck Standard, Section 5F). The patio sits by the deck, and we put in a new structural post underneath the deck as part of the job.
The seating wall and the river rock
The seating wall is natural flagstone, and river rock finishes the edges around the project.
